What to do in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber
Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber is a beautiful Bavarian town in Germany. It’s best seen in the morning before the 20 tourist busses arrive, late at night, or on weekdays. To be honest, even though it had so many adorable buildings and cute cobblestone streets, it was ruined for me with all the tourists; it kind of felt like I was at Disneyland or any other overcrowded theme park.
Two days (one night) in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber is all you’ll need.
Unfortunately I booked three nights and needed to do a day trip to Würzburg to escape the people.
The train from Steinach is the only train that goes to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber (takes about 20 minutes), and it runs hourly. If you’re coming from Nuremberg it’s an hour and a half journey.
Once you arrive in Rothenburg ODT just follow the people, everyone is walking into the old town (10 minute walk). There is also a map out the front of the station.
It’s probably best to find accommodation in the old town within the walls. I stayed at Pension Das Ladle but it was definitely not luxury.
Things to do
Medieval Crime Museum
A museum dedicated to torture and punishment in the medieval times. It’s surprising what people were punished for back then. This will take an hour or two of your day and cost around 6 euro.
In winter they have a beautiful Christmas market which are very crowded on weekends and much more enjoyable on weekdays. They sell everything all the other Christmas markets sell; gluhwein, hot chocolate, spatzle, gingerbread, sausages etc.
Doll and Toy Museum
I didn’t actually go to this because I didn’t want to wait in line. But this is an idea for something to do if you have kids.
Medieval ghost tour with the executioner
The Ghost Tour is nightly at 7pm. The meeting point is at the market square and it costs 8 euro. There is no need to book, just turn up, and pay cash at the end of the tour.
I did this tour and really enjoyed it. The group was small, possibly about 7 people. The executioner wears a red cloak and he walks you around the town telling stories of what evil things happened in Rothenburg back in the day and how life was like as an executioner.
Night watchman tour
The Night Watchman tour is nightly at 8pm. Meeting point is at the market square and costs 8 euro. I wanted to do this tour but actually thought the executioner tour was the same thing, I was wrong. My sister did this tour and she absolutely loved it.
Walk around the city wall
Walk around the The 2.4km stone wall that surrounds the old town. There are a lot of access stairs so just find the wall and walk along the bottom until you reach some stairs. Be careful in winter though they can have snow on them and be quite slippery. On this walk you will see only beautiful views of the city, bring your camera.
This little intersection is the most photographed in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. If you go before 8am you will be able to get a shot with no one in it.
Christmas shops, antiques, toys, hand made things, bakeries, butchers, cafes, all the types of stores a cute little old town would have. I didn’t see any designer stores here.
There are a few other things to do in Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber but they weren’t mentioned because they either didn’t interest me or they weren’t worth it. One night is all you will need to see everything.
